Abdominal pain, cramping

I know I feel better now, and I know how I was feeling then...
I'm still in awe of my experience...
What a terrible mistake!...
I decided to try Splenda again...
I wanted to pass along my story about sucralose...
I started using Splenda in small doses...
It sounded like my gall bladder...
They should put this warning on the box!!
I cannot walk or stand I am in so much pain...
Little did I know I was slowly poisoning my body...
I was finally able to trace these symptoms...
I am outraged...
I started to put it together a few days ago...
I am not myself anymore. What is wrong with me?
I figured out it had to be this product...
These symptoms disrupt my everyday life...
Great pain, cramps, constipation, and diarrhea...
The pain is almost unbearable...
That whole Splenda experience was very unfortunate...
As of today, I'm already feeling a little better...
Severe headaches, abdominal pain, gas, nausea...
Massive stomach cramps and gas...
Sucralose is not for me...
My face was completely red and puffy...
I had 3 fudgsicles that contained Splenda...
I had no idea why I was feeling so bad...
I had to make a trip to the ER and get a battery of tests...
I saw an advertisement for Pop Secret microwave kettle corn...
I got an acne-like rash on my neck and forehead...
I ingested Dreyers sugarfree ice cream...
I thought I was going to pass out the pain was so intense...
I would hate for a child to experience this type of pain...
I felt kind of like I was spaced-out...
I was eating Blue Bunny ice cream with Splenda in it...
I had acute, sharp cramps for several minutes...
I bought a bag of Carbolite jellybeans...
I know pain and this was definitely real...
I told them about the Splenda, and they sent me home!
I did not read the label--Bad Mommy...
Too dizzy and lightheaded to drive...
I would have gone to the emergency room...
I have experienced intestinal distress...
I am so much more sharp in my thinking now...
Nausea, cramps, and diarrhea...
It started almost four years ago...
My teenage son ate 15 packs of Splenda...

OK, this is really weird. I thought I was in heaven when I found a Splenda sweetened drink Fru**20. I was feeling guilty about all of the caffeinated diet sodas I drank on a regular basis, so these seemed like a great thing (and no aspartame!). Aside from the occasional diet soda, I started drinking these exclusively (a few bottles a day). For the past few months I've had a sore abdomen, just under my belly button where it feels like I pulled a muscle or something. It had gotten so bad that I was waking up at night in a sweat and really starting to worry that I might have something wrong with me.

I searched the web for possible causes and was astonished to find that many other folks have similar issues with Splenda products. As a test. I stopped drinking the Fru**20 a few days ago and the soreness has diminished to the point where it is barely noticeable! I am only posting here to add to the list of other folks with similar problems. I am still amazed that the Splenda seems to have had that affect on me. I am not allergic to any other foods...

I had a similar experience with the splenda additive in low carb ice creams. I had really severe cramping, and diarrea after eating a low carb ice cream. The intensity was so severe, I considered going to the hospital. The cramps lasted all night and I was doubled over in pain and only slept about two hours. I couldn't believe it would cause such pain and I tried a little another night and experienced the same cramping. Never again will I touch this product.

Okay, I'm not alone after all.
Seeking an alternative to sodas I started drinking Propel Fitness Water (a couple of bottles a day). I loved the taste and figured I was doing something healthier for my body, and other family members raved about it. Within a few days I started experiencing painful cramps, bloating, gas, and bouts with diarrhea. I couldn't believe it was the "fitness" water that was causing my problems, but I hadn't made any other changes in my diet. After a month, my symptoms were still persistent so I had to finally admit it was not "just something I ate a few days ago." I stopped drinking Propel five days ago. Within 2 days my symptoms were noticeably fading and as of today they are gone.

I'm very disappointed. I never reacted to aspartame or any other food products, but I guess I need to start checking ingredients labels from now on.

Indeed, Propel Fitness Water has been quite troublesome for those who couldn't identify the source of the problem right away. You were fortunate to be so astute.

I have been using Splenda as a sugar substitute for a long time now. I drink Propel Fitness water, Diet Rite, Pepsi One. I also use Splenda in preparing foods and in tea and coffee. I have had no problems and I think it is ridiculous to blame all of your problems on Splenda, when scientifically there have been no major problems found. I do understand that everything tends to have minor reactions such as headache, etc. You cannot get past this. Pretty much anything out there will give atleast some people these types of symptoms. But, the majority of people will not have and have not have any problems with Splenda. If you really want to look at products that cause problems look at the other sweeteners (nutrasweet, sweet & low) and even sugar. These products have many more problems that Splenda does. In conclusion, Splenda has not been proven harmful and isn't harmful. If you are in the minority category of people suffering from problems then avoid it and use another sweetener like nutrasweet or sweet & low, which have been proven to cause death. I am glad however that people are posting their opinions on Splenda. Keep on posting the comments...

I am amazed that people dont realize what goes in your system may cause a reaction. If it doesnt agree with you dont eat it.

I drink tea and then I have to run to the bathroom. Does that mean we should ban tea. No. Just figure it out.

Once the connection between the symptoms and the Splenda or sucralose consumption is discovered, people always stop using it. The link is not always obvious because many foods are consumed before the symptoms appear, and no one expects symptoms as severe as these from eating or drinking common food and beverages. Many people suspect that they have contracted some sort of an illness that requires medication. When they finally discover what happened to them, they are understandably angry.

I am so relieved!!! I'm not terminally ill! I have yogurt every morning with my cereal, and my favorite brand/flavor switched from aspartame to sucralose in January, '06. Woah. After about 1 month, I was having HORRIBLE abdominal pain and bloating. I seriously thought maybe I had colon cancer or some extreme illness showing its first signs! I had started a pricey multi-vitamin regimen at the same time, and I thought (hoped) it was that - not a disease. Then 2 days ago, when my stomach was looking like it did when I was 5 MONTHS PREGNANT (no kidding, folks), I wondered whether it was the Splenda in my yogurt. Can one 6-ounce cup a day really screw with my body that badly? Apparently so. I'm quitting cold turkey (which isn't a prblem, cuz I don't like the taste, anyway <:) ). I know the dangers of aspartame, and am down to just my Diet Mtn. Dew - will break that habit before my next pregnancy. My husband is a chiropractor and keeps on top of nutritional news. He's always warning me against my artificial sweeteners, but sometimes it takes a scare like this - to yourself - to really open your eyes. YIKES

on 2 different occasions I used jam sweetened with sucralose (splenda) and on both occasions I had diarrhea for 3 weeks afterwards . I also had a lot of gas at this time .

My abdomen bloated, my bowels were active, my head hurt, my right lower abdomen doubled me over in pain. I do not have a history of migraines or abdomen pain. The doctor could find nothing wrong with me so I continued drinking my lean sobe and green teas with splenda. Finally, I had to do something so I stopped using splenda products. Within a couple of days, my symptoms were gone. Now that I am researching splenda, I am finding I am not alone in these apparent side effects. A serious study needs to be done with honest documentation.

I have the exact same abdominal issues from Propel Fitness Water. The strange thing is, I used to drink it all the time a few months back and never had a problem. I only started drinking it again this week and have been experiencing abdominal pain. Wonder if something changed in the recipe?

Like so many others here, I experienced all the intestinal problems as a result of using Splenda.

Within 24 hours of not using this product I was feeling human again.

For over a month I had been feeling like there was something seriously wrong with me.

My doctor thought I just needed more fiber. :O

I don't need scientific evidence to know what the cause and effect of Splenda was for me.

I'm still in shock this even happened to me at all.

I had already made the connection before I decided to see what info was on the Web, but was so relieved to find I wasn't the only one, and was not crazy after all. :)

As for some of the other reported symptoms, well, all I know is that I didn't think they pertained to me until I really started thinking back.

Now I'm pretty much convinced that my mental confusion, anxiety, panic attacks, and possibly other symptoms were related as well.

How many more cases of adverse reactions do they need before acknowledging the problem?

I have been on Atkins and used a little bit of Splenda with no problems at all. Recently I wanted a change from water. I'd tried a lot of the flavored waters but thought they tasted like sick kool-aid. Then about a month ago I found Crystal Lite sweetened with Splenda! It tasted great and was a nice addition to my water.

For approximately 2 weeks now, I've had very loose bowels, frequent urination to the point I can not wait and over night can't even make it to the bathroom, but on top of that severe pain in my lower abdomen. I had to have a hysterectomy 4 years back due to bad PAP's and started worrying that maybe things had turned for the worse.

I've been trying to up my water consumption to clean out my system and started feeling a bit better but would have some Crystal Lite now and again and the pains have returned.

Today I had found a new flavor of Crystal Lite and mixed it up. Before I started to drink it I thought I'd check out the internet just to see if by chance there are adverse reactions to Splenda! WOW was I shocked.

I have also been having the bloating, headaches, shortness of breath, along with the loose bowels, frequent urination and severe pains in my lower abdomen!

Needless to say, this half gallon of Crystal Lite I just made is going down the drain. I'm hoping like the rest of you, my problems go away!

Thank you to everyone for sharing your stories! I will definitely let others know about Splenda and warn them.

i started using splenda in my coffee as a alternative to sugar. i
began in 0106. by 0606 i was sure i had developed colon cancer or some female problems. due to me being 49 i thought maybe it was hormonal. i was bloated, tired, suffering with abdominal cramps.my worst fears were nixed when i read the article about lucy watkins in First Magazine. it was like i had wrote the article myself. i also was drinking sodas with splenda along with yogurt and making gallons of tea at home with splenda. i stopped all splenda immediately. it has been 3 weeks and i am a new person. i've also lost 5 lbs. i think this product should be pulled off the market.

I had to leave work earlier today after eating a yogurt sweetened with splenda in the morning. It took about an hour for symptoms to manifest and then I was doubled over with severe abdominal pain. I could barely walk to a cab much less continue working. I realized that it might be an allergy because I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. The only connection I could make was this yogurt, which I had purchased at two different Starbucks locations in an effort to find something healthy. Although I do not have a lot of it, I have had splenda before with no adverse reaction. Has anyone found splenda in yogurt to be a problem but not other forms of splenda? Maybe yogurt has more splenda?

I started using Splenda about 8 months ago because I believe in a healthy diet. Two months into it I started experiencing all kinds of problems. Bloating, bowel problems, intense cramping you name it. It got so bad I was scared to go anywhere thinking I'd be ill at some point. I never connected the illness to Splenda and so I was cutting everything else out of my diet trying to pin point the problem. I thought "Im only 23 years old, I feel like Im dying." Everyday was a problem. I made two big juggs of tea with Splenda every other day it seemed for 8 months, its the only drink I have at home. I came across your website 2 days ago and couldnt believe that others had my exact symptoms. Ive not had it in 2 days and feel like I did 8 months ago, not one problem. I feel like Ive missed out on so much b/c of being sick for 6 months...I just never knew. Many people wouldnt think their illness to be related to this and will keep using the product, thats a shame.

I thought I had finally found a sugar substitute that tasted ok and left no bad after taste....I've given Splenda a couple of tries and each time I find myself extremely bloated...I suffer from abdominal pain, gas and diarrhea after after consuming Splenda sweetened beverages. I am very disappointed...

I wasn't aware of the side effects in Splenda. I knew I wasn't feeling well lately, stomach cramps, nausea, drymouth, headaches, dizzyness, gas, and diarrhea. I thought I had some type of stomach virus that kept coming back. One day while drinking a diet ginger ale a friend offered me some low fat kettle corn. I ate a few pieces & immediately vomitted. I was sweatting profusely & felt like I might pass out. The next day I examined the ingredients on both pacakages & tthe thing they had in common was Sucralose AKA Slplenda! I looked it up on line & there was a list of all my symptoms. I stopped eating anything w/ Splenda in it & haven't felt like that since. Friends & family think I'm nuts when I tell them about this, that I'm making it all up!
There is PLENTY of scientific data out there proving this MAY cause these symptoms in SOME people. everyone is different & to say there's no way this could be true is just ignorant! If Splenda doesn't make you sick, great, however, I'll stick w/ my sugar. It's natural!
I'd like to knowm however, why the company doesn't post these possible reactions on the box. It would have saved me a lot of time, trouble & money!

A ways back about 4 months after starting the rice diet I started getting some serious stomach pains. I had no clue what it was but tried to ignore it for awhile. Finally I couldn't take anymore so I went in and saw my doctor who promptly told me that I had a stomach ulcer. I got some meds and started taking them (not on the diet anymore).

Okay so now I go back on the rice diet and started using "Splenda" again and lo and behold guess who's stomach was starting to hurt again?! censored

I thought it may be the culprit and took myself off of it and now I am pain free. VIVA THE SPLENDA FREE REVOLUTION!!!

I have to post my comment on what I am reading about Spenda in food products that is causing abdominal discomfort to the extreme. It is NOT the Splenda in these food items that is making people sick. It is the sugar alcohols such as Malitol and Sorbitol that is causing the distress. If anyone will read on the sugar free icecream package, you will see that Malitol or Sorbitol is listed in the top three or four items where Splenda is listed at the bottom of the list. That means there is not enough Splenda in there to cause the damage. I am so sensitive to Malitol and Sorbitol that I cannot eat any "sugar free" foods with or without Splenda. Read closely on the package and you will read that eating too much Malitol or Sorbitol will cause gas and stomach distress. Beware of sugar alcohols. Splenda is not the cause.

My 4 year old son has been complaining of upset stomach on and off for about a month. Today he got into my purse and chewed/spit out probably 3 pieces of Orbit gum (main ingredient Sorbitol). He became violently ill today, throwing up, diarrea, etc. and I thought he might have the flu except there was a nagging feeling that somehow it was related to the gum incident. Upon doing some research I am excited (to know what to avoid) and saddened to find so many cases of similar illness linked to sweetners. What an eye opener! I hope he gets it out of his system and is okay, poor baby should not have had this happen.

Yesterday I bought a 6-ounce bag of Russell Stover Sugar-Free chocolate candy miniatures (2/12 servings per bag). Since I hadn't eaten anything all day, I thought it would be OK to eat over half the bag. Later last night (really early morning) I thought I had appendicitis. At 11 a.m. today when I could start to move without too much pain, I crawled to the candy bag and noticed the "Made with SPLENDA" seal of good taste. No warning or anything. Splenda is all over the Internet, but rarely do you see any flack on any of the other artificial sweeteners. It's even in Diet Coke. I'm going back to drinking S. Pellegrino again!

The first time I had the pain, it was in the Epigastric region (between the sternum and the belly button). It radiated straight out my back. I could not get any relief no matter what I tried. I went to the E.R. Unknown abdominal diagnosis, but my Liver enzymes where up. It took pain medication to get rid of the pain. I thought to myself, I hope this is not Hepatitis. I am in the health care profession and it's always a possability. I've had my Hep "A" and "B" vacs. I don't have the other signs or symptoms with it. I hope it's not Hep. "C". The one thing that eased that thought was green stool from a bowel movement (I know, sounds gross). This is telling me that my Gall Bladder is sick. But an Ultrasound came back negative for stones. So two weeks later on my follow up Liver panel, it was back to normal. Other test and scans to my Liver and Gall Bladder all came up negative. So was this just a fluke? A passing virus? What did I eat that could of been different? Well I started drinking coffee which is unusual for me. I could not figure it out and I had no diagnosis from my Dr.
About three months later it happend again. The exact same thing. Same test, same conclusion.
Till someone told me that they had a friend that was having some Liver problems after consuming Splenda. So I started thinking about my diet and there is a conection. I don't want to jump up and down and point my finger at it and say for sure that it was the culprit, but it did open my eyes to the possability. Since I am not getting much responce from my Doctor, I am thinking of a possable food allergy which includes Splinda.
Which brings me to last week when I had another attack after a good 6 month run. I had stopped using Splenda as a sweetner untill that day. I was doubled over again with a higher suspicion of what could of caused it. Don't know 100% for sure, But I have no plans on testing the theory.
So I'm still searching for an answer (and a new Doctor) for this, show up and disappear act, problem. Until then, we'll see.

Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. The reason; I am about 25 lbs overweight and have been eating the wrong foods my whole life. I love my sweets, so I tried Splenda. Within two hours after using in I thought my insides were going to explode with gas; I has diarrhea until my systems was flushed. Still not believing it was the splenda I bought some popsicles with splenda, within two hours the same side effects occurred. Then I started searching the internet for side effects of Splenda and I knew then, I’ll never touch splenda again.

Myself also..I just stopped using splenda yesterday. I feel somewhat better today..but still not up to par.
I experienced so much gas and bloating that I had a hard time making it through the day I was so uncomfortable.
I made a doctor's appt for next week thinking I am having intenstinal problems as it is very big in my family, but after what I read I think I know the problem

I am glad I am not alone - thank you to everyone for posting. I have gotten a bad rash on my forehead, nose, neck and chin that itches and kept getting worse. Thanks to an elimination diet and internet research, I figured out that Splenda is definitely the problem. I know some people would have gone to the doctor, but I find doctors basically useless as all they want to do is give you medicine after medicine, rather than helping you find the root cause. I had migraines for years and it took my own research and test-dieting to figure out that certain foods with amines in them are the cause. A simple solution that a good doctore could have helped me with decades ago.

I wonder how long it will take for the Splenda to get out of my system?

Today we went to Burger King and my stepson got a Minute Maid Light Lemonade in his kid's meal. I poured it into a sip cup, and drank the rest that didn't fit in the cup--probably about 1 to 2 ounces at the most.

About 15 or so minutes I had to use the bathroom (stomach pains), then when I was finished, I noticed I was getting a 'sinus' headache. My husband looked at me and asked if I felt okay. He could hear me wheezing a little bit. I had to take a nap, and when I awoke, 2 hours later, I was sweating like crazy--like a hotflash came over me.

I do have some allergies--such as I'm allergic to sulfa drugs, sulfites, kiwi, MSG, and Morphine. With those allergies, if I accidentally get any of those items, my mouth starts to tingle--gums, tongue, and I can start to itch--sometimes I would get hives but that's very rare now that I found out about being allergic to Sulfa drugs. I guess I can add sucralose to my list of allergies. I have no problems using Sweet'N Low.

Thank you,

I guess I am not alone! I woke up this morning intense abdominal pain so bad that I could not stand up. I thought that it was appendicitis or perhaps gallstones but my mom told me it sounded like sharp gas pains. I have never had such pain in my stomach before and was not feeling "gassy" but just bloated and extremely uncomfortable. I have recently started eating a lot of the ice cream club's soft-serve frozen yogurt sweeted with Splenda because it tastes like the real thing but is extremely low-calorie. In fact, I brought home a quart of it and had about 2 bowls after dinner last night feeling guilt-free because it has practially zero cals. I drink at least 4-5 cans of diet soda every day and use about 4 packs of splenda in tea/ coffee. I also use the artificially sweetened Activia Lights AND the Quaker Oatmeal breakfasts. I have never had stomach problems before today. It is a few hours later and I still have some discomfort but the extreme pain has resided. I think I'll start using Splenda in moderation and maybe limit myself to a bowl of the Perfect 10 yogurt once a week.

I once tried Splenda because my mom had read it is so good for you(yeah....right), and I ended up feeling ill for three days! I hadnt had anything out of the ordinary that day, but I still felt really ill and found that it was most likely the Splenda! Why do they make a product that can cause pain to so many people?

Wow ... I know I can not have splenda. When I eat it, within a half hour I am doubled over in agony.

I bought a soda yesterday and did not see splenda but a half later got the symptoms and KNEW I had just ate splenda. Turns out Sucralose is the same as splenda and I did not know that. I have been sick all night, did not sleep, pain, diarrhea , sick to stomach. This stuff needs to be pulled of of the market!
